Packaging that has been produced in conformity with the European Standard EN-13432 is degradable to such an extent that the greatest part of the resulting compost will ultimately decompose (into carbon dioxide, biomass and water). A package is compostable (or biologically degradable) if the following criteria are complied with:
- the material and its relevant organic components are naturally biodegradable (as demonstrated by lab tests);
- the decomposition of the material takes place in a composting process for biological waste;
- the product cannot have a negative effect on the composting process;
- the quality of the compost may not be affected negatively by the product.
